ZIP Viewer & Maker
Open a ZIP to see its files as a tree with sizes, dates and compression, look at text and pictures inside, and save one file or all of them. Or make a ZIP from files or a folder.
About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example
What it's for
Look inside a ZIP file without unpacking it, or make a ZIP from files or a folder, all in your browser. Opening one lists its files as a tree with each file’s size, packed size, date and compression method, shows text files and pictures inside it, and saves one file or all of them.
For example, when someone sends you a ZIP and you want to check what’s in it before extracting, or find one file in a big archive, open it here and view or save only that file.
How to use it
Choose a ZIP under Open a ZIP, or drop one on the page. Folders come first in the list, and a folder’s sizes are the totals of what’s in it. View shows a text file or a picture below the list; Save saves that file. Save all into a folder asks you to choose a folder and writes every file there (Chrome and Edge only; other browsers save one file at a time).
To make a ZIP, choose files or a folder under Make a ZIP, or drop them on the page (a single dropped file ending
in .zip is opened instead). Add more as often as you like, then choose Make the ZIP. A folder keeps its
paths, and the ZIP is named after it. Files that are already compressed, such as pictures and videos, are stored as
they are.
Example
Under Make a ZIP, choose two or three small text files and then Make the ZIP; it saves files.zip. Drop
that file on the page: it appears as a list of those files, each with a Stored or Deflated method. Choose
View on a text file to read it.
Good to know
Files are held in memory while the page works, so very large ones may fail. It reads and writes ZIPs of up to about 4
GB and 65,534 files; larger ZIP64 archives, and ZIPs with encrypted files, give a message and aren’t opened. Only
stored and deflated files can be viewed or saved, which covers nearly all ZIPs; files using other methods (such as
LZMA or Zstandard) are listed but can’t be extracted. Text is shown if it is UTF-8; other encodings may be offered
only as a download. The new ZIP has no empty folders and no password, and file dates are set to the time you make
it. Names in an opened ZIP are shown as they are, but when saving all, .. and drive letters are removed from
paths. Unpack ZIPs you don’t trust on a device you can afford to lose files on: saving a file doesn’t check it for
harm.
