About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example
What it's for
Make the paper you want to write or draw on, printed or on an e-ink tablet: lined, squared, dots, isometric, hexagons, music staves, Cornell notes, three-line handwriting practice, or a yellow legal pad with its red margin. Choose a paper size or the pixel size of a tablet, set the spacing, margins and colours, and save a PDF (drawn as lines, so it prints sharp at any size), an SVG or a PNG.
For example, when you want dot-grid pages for a bullet journal on a Supernote, choose Dot grid, choose Supernote A5 X as the size and save the PNG.
How to use it
Choose a Kind, then a Size (paper, a tablet, or your own: width and height, or pixels and density). The settings that apply to that kind appear: Spacing, Margin, Header space and a Margin line for lined paper; a Heavier line every so many squares; Staves and the Gap between them for music; the Cue column and Summary box for Cornell notes; the gap between groups of handwriting lines. Lengths are in millimetres or inches, as you choose under Lengths in; changing it converts the numbers. Choosing a kind puts in its usual spacing, so change the spacing after choosing it.
Line weight, Paper colour and Line colour have presets and a custom colour. The yellow legal pad sets the yellow paper, blue rules and a double red margin line. The picture below the settings shows the page.
Save PDF makes the number of Pages asked for, all the same, at the page’s real size. Tick Paper colour on screen only to leave the paper colour out of the PDF, for printing on coloured paper. Save SVG and Save PNG always include the paper colour; the PNG is 300 dpi for paper sizes (a little less for the very large) and exactly the screen’s pixels for a tablet. Choosing a tablet shows the PDF’s size as pixels divided by the screen’s density. Copy a link to this input keeps all the settings.
Where a tablet takes templates: a Supernote reads them from its MyStyle folder; others let you import the PDF or
PNG as a document or template.
Example
Choose Squared (graph), A4, set Spacing to 5 and Heavier line every to 5, and choose Save PDF:
you get squared-paper.pdf, one A4 page of 5 mm squares with a stronger line every 25 mm, inside a 10 mm margin.
Good to know
A tablet’s size is only a guess at what it accepts: the pixel sizes and densities in the list are from the makers’ published figures and may change with a model or software version, and the names are used only to say what a size fits. This tool isn’t made by or connected to any of them, and a device may not take a template at all, or may need it in another format or folder. On a greyscale screen every colour turns to a grey, and pale lines can be faint, so use a heavier weight or a darker line colour. Custom sizes are kept between 50 and 1000 mm, spacing to 1.5 mm or more and a PDF to 50 pages. Lines are drawn exactly as set, but a printer may shift a page slightly, so measure a printed page before relying on its spacing. Nothing is uploaded.
