AICC Wrapper

Build a small AICC wrapper that opens a web page or document kept outside the LMS, so it's always the latest version, and reports completion to the LMS: straight away, or when the learner opens it and presses a confirm button. Made for SuccessFactors Learning's AICC launch method, with course files for other LMSs.

About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example

What it's for

Build a small AICC wrapper: a web page that the learning management system (LMS) launches, which reports a completion to the LMS and opens a page or document kept somewhere else, such as an intranet page or a PDF on a document library. As the content stays where it is, learners always get its latest version, with no package to upload again when it changes.

For example, in SuccessFactors Learning, put the wrapper’s files on your content server once. Then each policy document becomes a content object with the AICC launch method, the wrapper as its Filename, and docURL= and the document’s address as its Parameters, as SAP’s knowledge base article 2317484 describes.

How to use it

Give a title, and the address to open if there’s only one. Leave the address empty to share one wrapper between many items, each giving its own docURL in its launch parameters. A docURL given at launch always wins.

  • Sites it may open: one host name per line. The wrapper only opens addresses on those sites (and its own server), so nobody can use it to send learners somewhere else. Leave it empty to allow any web address.
  • Complete: On opening reports completion and then goes straight to the address in the same window. With a confirm button shows a page with your heading and text, a link that opens the content in a new tab, and your button, which can be pressed only once the link has been opened.
  • Status to report: completed, passed or browsed, the statuses SuccessFactors accepts from AICC content.
  • Add AICC course files adds the .crs, .au, .des and .cst files that an LMS needs to import the wrapper as an AICC course, with the wrapper as the launch file and the address as its Web_Launch parameter.

Save the wrapper (ZIP) downloads wrapper.html, wrap.js and wrap.css (and the course files). SuccessFactors content object settings shows what to enter on the content object’s launch method, ready to copy.

Example

Enter the title Code of Conduct, the address /iContent/CUSTOM/policies/conduct.pdf, and choose With a confirm button. The settings box reads:

Launch type: AICC
Filename: <the folder's path on your content server>/wrapper.html
Parameters: docURL=/iContent/CUSTOM/policies/conduct.pdf

The ZIP holds wrapper.html, wrap.js, wrap.css, Code-of-Conduct.crs, .au, .des and .cst. Opened in the Package Player, it shows the heading, your text, Open the content and the button, greyed out until the link is used. Pressing it logs a PutParam with Lesson_Status=completed, then ExitAU.

Good to know

The wrapper reports completion: it can’t tell whether the content was read, and it sends no score. It talks to the LMS with AICC’s HACP messages, sent to the address the LMS gives at launch (aicc_url). When that’s on another site the browser doesn’t let the wrapper read the LMS’s replies, so they’re sent without being checked.

Some sites refuse to be shown inside another page, which is why the content opens in a window of its own rather than in a frame. SAP doesn’t support custom wrappers, so test one with your own LMS before relying on it, and again after LMS updates.

Leave it empty to use one wrapper for many items, each giving its own docURL parameter. When given, it's built in for when a launch has no docURL.
