Hash / Checksum
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-2, SHA-3, BLAKE2, BLAKE3, RIPEMD-160, CRC-32 and Adler-32 of text or a file, HMACs with a key, and a check of a published hash that also says what kind of hash it is.
About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example
What it's for
Calculate the hashes of some text or a file: MD5, SHA-1, the SHA-2 family (SHA-224 to SHA-512), SHA-3, BLAKE2, BLAKE3 and RIPEMD-160, plus the CRC-32 and Adler-32 checksums. A hash is a fingerprint: any change to the input gives a completely different hash.
For example, when you’ve downloaded an installer and the website lists its SHA-256 checksum, use this to check that your copy is complete and hasn’t been tampered with.
How to use it
Type or paste text and choose Hash text, or choose a file. Every hash appears at once, each with a Copy button. Type an HMAC key as well and the HMAC of each SHA algorithm is added: a hash mixed with a secret key, as used to sign webhooks and API requests. To check a download, paste the published hash into Expected hash: the tool tells you which algorithm it matches, or that it doesn’t match and which algorithms a hash of that length usually comes from, so you know what you’ve been given.
Example
Type this and choose Hash text:
hello
The SHA-256 is 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824 and the MD5 is
5d41402abc4b2a76b9719d911017c592. Change it to Hello and every hash changes completely. With key as the
HMAC key, the HMAC-SHA-256 is 9307b3b915efb5171ff14d8cb55fbcc798c6c0ef1456d66ded1a6aa723a58b7b.
Good to know
Text is hashed as UTF-8, and a trailing space or line break changes the result. CRC-32 and Adler-32 catch accidental damage only; anyone can make a file match them. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checking downloads but no longer secure against deliberate tampering, so prefer SHA-256. Files are read into memory, so very large ones may be slow.
