Redact for AI

Swap API keys, tokens, passwords, email and IP addresses, and names you list, for numbered placeholders before pasting text into an AI chat, then put the originals back into its reply.

About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example

What it's for

Take secrets and personal details out of text before you paste it into an AI chat such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and put them back into the answer afterwards. Each value is swapped for a placeholder like <EMAIL_1> or <TOKEN_2>, so the AI can still follow the text without seeing the real thing.

For example, when you want help with an error log that contains an API key, a colleague’s email address and your server’s IP address, redact it here, ask the AI, then paste its reply back to see it with the real values.

How to use it

Paste the text. It’s checked for private keys, API keys and tokens (OpenAI, Anthropic, GitHub, GitLab, AWS, Google, Slack, Stripe, SendGrid, npm and Hugging Face formats, and JSON Web Tokens), passwords and secrets written as password=… or api_key: …, user names and passwords inside URLs, email addresses and IP addresses. Untick any kind you want to leave in; those choices are remembered. Add names of people, companies or projects in the names box. The same value always gets the same placeholder, so the AI can tell when two mentions are the same thing.

Copy Redacted into the AI. Paste its answer into The AI’s reply and the placeholders are swapped back, with or without their angle brackets. What was hidden lists every placeholder and its value.

Example

Choose Try an example, or paste this and type Priya in the names box:

Hi Priya, the staging box at 10.0.0.12 rejects my key sk-proj-abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwx. Logs go to ops@example.com.

The redacted text is Hi <NAME_1>, the staging box at <IP_1> rejects my key <TOKEN_1>. Logs go to <EMAIL_1>. Paste Ask <NAME_1> to check the firewall on IP_1. into the reply box and you get Ask Priya to check the firewall on 10.0.0.12.

Good to know

Patterns can’t find everything: a password written in a sentence, a home address or a customer number isn’t recognised, so read the redacted text before you paste it, and add anything missed to the names box. The list of placeholders is kept only while the page is open; it’s never saved, so reloading the page means the reply can’t be restored. Names are matched as whole words, ignoring capitals.

What was hidden

Put the originals back

The list of placeholders lives only on this page while it's open: it isn't saved, and closing or reloading the page forgets it. Only the checkboxes are remembered.

Private: this tool runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or choose leaves this page.
