About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example

What it's for

Rearrange a jumble of letters, a name or a phrase into other words. You get every phrase that uses all the letters exactly once, and every single word that can be made from some of them.

  • When you’re stuck on an anagram clue or a letters game such as Countdown.
  • When you’re looking for a pen name, a puzzle answer or a bit of fun hidden in someone’s name.

How to use it

Type the letters, a name or a phrase. Spaces, punctuation and capitals are ignored, and accented letters count as plain ones. Choose how many Words in an anagram to allow and the Shortest word to use; both are remembered in this browser. To build an anagram round a word you’ve already spotted, put it in Must include: the tool takes out its letters and rearranges the rest.

Anagrams with fewer words come first, and Copy copies them, one per line. Below them, Words from these letters lists every word that can be made from some of the letters, longest first.

Example

Type this:

eleven plus two

With up to 3 words, the tool reports 514 anagrams using every letter., starting with elevens low put, and twelve plus one is among them. envelopes and plenteous head the list of words. Put twelve in Must include and the 514 narrow to 18, from twelve lone pus to twelve soul pen.

Good to know

The words come from SCOWL’s size-60 English list (about 80,000 words, in British and American spellings), so very rare words, names and most abbreviations aren’t included, while a few odd short words such as nth are.

Long phrases have a huge number of anagrams. The tool shows the first 1,000 and stops searching after 2 seconds, saying so when it does; allow fewer words, or raise the shortest word, to narrow the search.
