About
The ThoughtAsylum Toolbox is made by me, Stephen Millard (also known as sylumer), the person behind ThoughtAsylum.
The site is in preview
The Toolbox is new, so for its first few months, until 1 January 2027, I’m calling it a preview. That doesn’t change the most important thing: every tool still runs entirely in your browser, and nothing you put into one is sent anywhere.
What it does mean:
- Tools are still arriving. New tools and additional functions in existing tools may occur more frequently; new and updated tools get called out on the home page.
- Things may shift. A tool’s options, layout or name might change as I polish it, and a link to one could move.
- There may be rough edges. The tools have been checked, but not yet used by many people on many devices and browsers, so there will inevitably be some bugs to squash and user interface oddities to address.
Once the preview ends, this note goes, and so does the “Preview” label beside the logo.
Why it exists
On my own computer (a Mac) I have plenty of tools for encoding, formatting, converting and inspecting things. At work I don’t always have access to an equivalent. While sometimes at work I am dealing with abstract or public data, there are times when I am not. I can’t simply paste work data into whatever website a search turns up.
When faced with a problem, I did what I usually do. I built myself a solution.
This site is intended as a one-stop shop for the tools I might need. A place I can trust with my data because it never gets sent anywhere - it just lives in my browser on my computer (or my tablet, or phone).
That trust comes from how it’s built:
- Everything runs in your browser. What you type, paste or choose is processed on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- No advertising. There are no ad networks that could serve something malicious.
- No third-party libraries or hosting. Every script, font and image comes from this site, not from a CDN or someone else’s server.
You don’t have to take my word for it. The privacy page explains the principles with which the tools have been created, and shows how to check for yourself that your data isn’t leaving your browser.
For everyone
Because I figured that others might be in a similar situation, I decided it would be worth making this a public website. In fact, I decided that other people might want other tools, and I have tried to add some of those too.
At the end of the day, the site was built for me to use, but the benefit of the site gets multiplied for everyone who uses it. So if you know someone who might find it useful, let them know.
Bugs and suggestions
Found something that doesn’t work, or a tool you wish were here? Tell me on GitHub:
Every report and suggestion is welcome and read. This is a hobby project, though, so not every one will get an answer or be built. You can see what’s already been raised on the tracker.
Issues are public, so never paste private data, tokens or files into one. Describe the problem, or make up an example that shows it.
