Crossword Helper

Type the letters you know and a ? for each one you don't, and see every word that fits; or find words starting with, ending with or containing letters, matching a regular expression, or fitting your Wordle clues.

About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example

What it's for

Find every word that fits the letters you already have, such as a half-filled crossword answer.

For example, when a seven-letter answer has T, E and A L in place, t?e??al finds the word that fits.

How to use it

Type the answer as you know it: a letter where you have one and a ? for each gap (a . or _ works too). A * stands for any number of letters, including none, so un*able finds words that start with “un” and end with “able”. Capitals and spaces are ignored. Matching words appear as you type, in alphabetical order.

Find words also searches for words starting with, ending with or containing some letters, words using all these letters (in any order, repeats counted), or words matching a regular expression, with an optional length; the choice is remembered.

For Wordle, type the green letters in place (?r??e), the yellow letters under the place where each was tried, and the grey letters. Every five-letter word that fits is listed. A letter that’s both yellow or green and grey (a guess with a repeated letter) is treated as being in the word.

Example

Type this:

c_o_s_o_d

The tool reports 2 matching words.: crossroad and crossword.

Good to know

Answers are single words from SCOWL’s size-60 English list (about 80,000 words, in British and American spellings), so multi-word answers, names, places and rare words aren’t found. To check a two-word answer, look up each word on its own.

It matches letters only, not clues. A pattern that’s all * or very short can match thousands of words; the tool shows the first 2,000.

In a pattern, ? (or . or _) stands for one missing letter and a * for any number of them, so *ing finds words ending in “ing”.
