Use it offline
Why it matters
Every tool here runs in your browser, and once the site has loaded it doesn’t need the internet at all. That’s the plainest proof that nothing you work on is uploaded: with the network off, there’s nowhere for it to go.
Installing is optional. Every tool works offline in the browser once you’ve visited the site. Installing it as an app only adds an icon to your Dock, desktop or home screen, and gives it a window of its own.
Installing it as an app
- Chrome or Edge on a computer: choose the install icon at the right of the address bar, or Install ThoughtAsylum Toolbox from the browser’s menu.
- Safari on a Mac: File › Add to Dock.
- iPhone and iPad: in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
- Chrome on Android: tap ⋮, then Install app (or Add to Home screen).
- Firefox can’t install sites as apps, but the tools still work offline in it once the site has loaded.
Check it yourself
Load any page here, then disconnect from the internet completely: turn off Wi-Fi, unplug the network cable, disconnect any tethered phone or mobile broadband dongle, or simply turn on flight mode. You can also tick Offline on the Network tab of your browser’s developer tools, which cuts off just that tab. Then open any tool, including ones you haven’t used, and use it: everything works, and nothing can leave your device.
What’s kept, and when
Your browser saves every page and the files they need on your first visit. Some larger files are saved only the first time a tool uses them: the English words for the Anagram Solver and Crossword Helper, the EFF word list for the Password Generator’s passphrases, the places for the World Clock, the letter statistics for the Cipher Cracker, and the text reader (about 6 MB) for Image to Text. To have them before you’re offline, save everything now:
This keeps the site’s own files only, never anything you’ve typed or chosen. Your settings are kept separately, as the privacy page explains.
Updates and removal
When the site changes, your browser picks up the new version the next time you visit with a connection; there’s nothing to do. To remove the saved copy, clear this site’s data in your browser’s settings, and uninstall the app too if you installed it.
