About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example
What it's for
Get everything measurable about a piece of writing: counts, averages, reading and speaking times, readability scores and reading age, plus curiosities such as the longest word and whether it’s a pangram.
- When you’re checking an essay or article against a word limit.
- When you’re timing a speech.
- When you’re making sure writing is easy enough for its audience.
- When you’re working out how many posts or text messages something will take.
How to use it
Type or paste text and every figure updates as you go. The results are grouped as counts, averages, time, readability and curiosities. Reading age is the average US school grade from five formulas (Flesch–Kincaid, Gunning fog, SMOG, Coleman–Liau and ARI), plus five years.
Example
Paste this:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. It was not amused.
The tool counts 13 words and 2 sentences, gives a Flesch reading ease of 96.1 (very easy) and a reading age of 7–8 years, and confirms it’s a pangram, because it uses every letter from A to Z.
Good to know
Readability scores are formulas designed for English prose, and syllables are estimated from spelling, so treat them as a guide rather than a verdict. Short texts and lists give unreliable scores.
