Random Picker

Pick names from a list, shuffle it, split it into groups, choose random numbers, roll dice in 2d6+3 notation or flip coins, fairly, with your browser's secure random numbers.

About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example

What it's for

Make a fair random choice: draw a winner from a list of names, put a list in random order, split people into teams, pick numbers, roll dice or flip a coin. Every choice uses your browser’s cryptographic random numbers, with no bias towards any item.

For example, to draw a raffle, paste the entrants’ names, choose Pick from a list with 1, and choose Go while everyone watches the screen.

How to use it

Choose What to do, fill in the fields it shows, and choose Go (choose it again for a new result).

  • Pick from a list: that many different items, in the order drawn.
  • Shuffle a list: every item in a random order.
  • Split a list into groups: shuffled, then dealt into that many groups, so sizes differ by one at most.
  • Random numbers: whole numbers from the lowest to the highest, both included, with or without repeats.
  • Roll dice: standard notation, several separated by spaces: 2d6, d20+5, d% (1 to 100), and 4d6kh3 to keep the highest 3 (or kl for the lowest). Each roll is listed beside the total.
  • Flip coins: heads or tails, with a count when you flip more than one.

Blank lines and spaces around items are ignored. What to do is remembered in the browser. Copy a link to this input keeps the settings and list, and opening it draws afresh.

Example

Choose Try an example, which picks 2 of Alice, Bob, Carol, Dave, Erin and Frank. You get two of the names, different each time you choose Go.

Good to know

The result isn’t saved or provable afterwards, so for a draw that must be checked later, record the screen or note the time shown. Up to 10,000 numbers or coins at once, numbers in a range of up to about 4 billion, and up to 1,000 dice of up to a million sides each.

Private: this tool runs in your browser. Nothing you type, paste or choose leaves this page.
