Font Inspector

Open a font file to try it without installing it: type your own text, change its size, variable axes and OpenType features, and see its names, licence, embedding rights, metrics, every character it has and how much of each alphabet it covers.

About this tool What it's for, how to use it and an example

What it's for

Look inside a font file and try it out without installing it. You see what the font calls itself, who made it, its licence and whether it may be embedded in documents and apps, its measurements, every character it contains, and how much of each alphabet it covers, and you can type your own text in it.

For example, when you’ve downloaded a font for a project, open it here to check it has the accented letters your text needs, read its licence, and try its stylistic sets before installing it.

How to use it

Choose a .ttf, .otf, .woff or .woff2 file (or a .ttc collection, whose first font is shown), or drop it on the page.

  • Preview shows your text in the font: type over it. Size makes it bigger or smaller.
  • A variable font gets a slider for each of its axes, such as weight or width.
  • OpenType features lists the font’s extras, such as ligatures, small capitals or old-style figures; tick one to see it in the preview.
  • The table gives the names, version, maker, designer, licence, embedding rights, glyph and character counts, the vertical metrics (in font units, out of the units per em), the scripts it supports, and its axes and named styles.
  • Characters by alphabet counts the characters in each Unicode block, and Every character shows them all (the first 3,000 in a very large font); hover over one for its code point.

Example

Save this site’s own font from this address and open it:

https://toolbox.thoughtasylum.com/assets/fonts/montserrat.woff2

The message says Montserrat Thin Regular, 242 characters. The table shows the WOFF2 format with TrueType outlines, embedding rights of “Installable: no restrictions”, 266 glyphs, a weight axis from 500 to 600 with named styles Medium and SemiBold, and the features kern and liga. It covers all of Basic Latin and most of Latin-1 Supplement, as it’s a subset made for this site.

Good to know

The embedding rights are what the font file claims; the licence that came with the font is what counts. Reading a font doesn’t change it, and nothing is installed: the preview only lasts while the page is open. Some features only show in certain letters or languages, so ticking one may seem to do nothing with the sample text.

The character grid shows each character as this browser draws it in the font; one the font lacks falls back to another font.
